Trip to Mexico...Cancelled
by: Byron Daley '10
This year the Mount had plans for an eight-day trip to Mexico starting on April 6 th. The schedule was divided into days just like last year’s Trip to Europe . Each day would consist of the different area of Mexico to visit. Unfortunately this trip will not happen due to the unrest surrounding the violent drug wars occurring in Mexico right now. This condition made it far too dangerous for students to visit these great places in Mexico. As of now, it is unclear if another location will be scheduled or if the whole thing will be canceled for this year.
The experience was set to begin on day one with a walk-through Chapultepec Park or the Paseo de la Reforma just after the long flight down there.
Day two would have been all about Mexico City. This was sure to be a blend of Mexico’s past and present as the group would be visiting sites such as the Zocalo, the main square in Mexico City, Aztec ruins around the city, the National Palace, and many more places of interest around the city. On the third day of the trip, the group would be taken on a short drive outside of the city to see the Shrine of Guadalupe, and take a trip down the Avenue of Death in Teotihuacan, which is lined with ancient temples from many years ago.
Day four would be a plane flight from Mexico City to Merida on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. After arriving we would have tour places like the Palace of the Governor, and the Nunnery Quadrangle. Day five would be a continuation of sight seeing in Merida followed by some free time in the city. On day six, tthe group would drive to the ancient Mexican city of Chichen Itza, and visit El Castillo a pyramid used as a Spanish fortress. At the end of the day the group would travel to Cancun for the final two days of the trip.
On the seventh day, the group would have the option of a free day in Cancun or to go visit the Xcaret, an ancient Mayan ceremonial center that was transformed into an eco-archaeological park. On day eight, the group would we ready to depart from Cancun back to New York after having spent seven days in Mexico.
