Mount Hockey
by: Garret Grant '08
In case you haven't heard on the announcements, the Mount hockey team has had a decent year. The team holds a record of 4-8 and has guaranteed themselves a spot in the playoffs. The team has seen much of their success against Bishop Ford and St. Ray's as they have won three games against Ford and a game against St. Rays. The win against St. Rays was one of the most entertaining games of the year, as the team came from behind and won 3-2.
The team consists of many young players who have played very little hockey or have never played hockey before. Yet the team's youth will help in the future. Freshmen Pat McEnaney, Kieran Moran, Timothy Schilling, Patrick Gannon, and Carlos Nolan, have played with stunning success as they have gotten increasingly better as the season progressed. The team has also seen the return of sophomores Jason Engeldrum, and Anthony Belloise who although are young showed maturity in tough situations. Anthony Bello and Dominic Scipioni, both sophomores, played increasingly well as the games got tougher. The lone junior on the team, Mario Scipioni, scored his first goal of his hockey career and is a major contributor to the team as he is an enforcer making big hits on other teams best players. Senior captain's Garrett Grant and Ted Robertson added in their sense of maturity and experience playing against other teams' best players and proving they can play with the "better" players of the league. One player who has had an outstanding year is Freshman goalie, Anthony Santiago. He had a rough start but has truly played better as the season has gone to the tough part of the schedule. He makes big saves in big situations and keeps the team in close games. The coaching staff lead by Jim Clark and Jim Felekos teach the players life lessons both on the ice and off the ice. As the team continues to get more experience and maturity, the program will soon see progress and hopefully return to the days of their past when Mount had a team that could compete for championships.
Unfortunately for the team, they are in a division where the other teams are either better or they are an inexperienced team who is rebuilding. The Mount team faces other teams who have players who have been playing hockey since they were young. Teams like Holy Cross and Spellman and considered the powerhouses of the division as they roll through teams like Mount and St. Rays. The team has also been hit with the "injury bug" as sophomore Andreas Santiago sustained a broken wrist early in the year, and Senior Ted Robertson sustained a separated shoulder thanks to a dirty hit from a player on Spellman.
The team shows grit and determination in every game that they play in as the team continues to play no matter what the score is. The team bases itself on respect, teamwork, and hard work. These areas are seen in every aspect of the game, whether during the game, at practice, or in the locker room.
The team shows promise as the young players will grow and get better. The season is still not over as the team has four games left in the season, with two games that the team has a chance of winning. Not to mention the team will also be guaranteed a shot in the playoffs. So if you are not doing anything later this month come and support the team on their way to the playoffs.
