Midnight Run
by: Danny Federico '10
The Midnight Run is something special that Mount Saint Michael does a few times a year to help the needy and the poor. It is a very courageous, helpful and thankful thing to do. I conducted an interview with Mr. Hayes, the leader of Campus Ministry, and also one of the people who help out with the Midnight Run. I first asked who helped with the Midnight Run, and Mr. Hayes responded with 10-12 students, and also including Mr. Hayes, and two teachers Mr. Van Bomel and Mr. Dilone. The things that these groups of people do, Mr. Hayes stated, that they go on pre-assigned runs (4) where the homeless are staying, and they give out food, clothing and other accessories needed to help. The group goes through Manhattan, predominantly Penn Station, Port Authority, 31st Street and Saint Francis of Assisi Church. The next Midnight Run is being held February 15th. The group leaves at about 9 P.M. and usually returns approximately 1 A.M, The way they get all of the items needed is by the generous donations by the students and staff of Mount St. Michael. Mr. Hayes also said the reason why he and the others do this is because people have many needs, and it gives the students who go to see the reality of the real world. "It gives me a good feeling because I helped others, and I also love to see how tge students reacted with the people, especially their openness towards the people, and most importantly, I can see the Christ in all of the homeless." Mr. Hayes said when I asked him how the overall feeling of the event was. Overall, from the interview with Mr. Hayes, and from prior knowledge, the Midnight Run is a great thing being done by Mount St. Michael and everyone, including students and staff, should all participate in one way or another.
