READING TASK

You must read THREE books. For each book you read, choose ONE of the following:
  1. After you read the book you have chosen, assume that one or more of the characters is a real person. Please write a letter to the character(s) as if she/he/they were your friends. You may want to ask questions about the choices made in the novel, you may want to offer advice about those choices, or you may want to share a personal experience that was similar to one in the novel. Please include any other ideas or comments to the character(s) you wish, and please write as if this were a real letter to a real friend.

  2. Assume you write for the school or local newspaper. Please write an explanation and review of the novel you have read. Would you recommend that others read this novel? Why or why not? Would some age groups or types of people be more likely to enjoy this novel? What ages? What types? Why would these age groups or types of readers enjoy this novel?

  3. Assume you have been asked to turn this novel into a movie. What scenes do you think would be very effective on film? What changes would you make in the novel so it would be more effective as a film? Why? What changes would you make in the novel so it would be more effective as a film? Why? What actors and actresses would you want to play the characters in the novel? Why? Can you explain the kind of music you would use as background in the movie?

  4. Rewrite the major conflict and/or plot of the novel as a newspaper story. Remember, the newspaper story is to tell Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How in an objective manner; your opinion should not be shown in the newspaper story.

  5. Write an editorial or "Letter to the Editor" about the major conflict and/or plot of the novel; please be sure that your editorial or letter clearly and effectively explains your opinions.

  6. Write a diary entry which you believe the main character in the novel would write at the end of the story.

  7. Imagine the main character had a portfolio of possessions that were most important to him or her or that showed the character's personality. Describe what would be in this portfolio and what each item shows about the person.

  8. Write an obituary about the main character(s) or write the eulogy that you would deliver at the funeral of the main character(s).

  9. Write a job recommendation for the main character. For what kind of job would the character be most qualified? What are his or her outstanding personal traits or characteristics?
