Junior High Tip-Off Tourney 2006

On November 4th the Mount Saint Michael Boys Junior High basketball team won the first Annual Mount Tip-Off Tournament. The Mount Junior High beat St Paul's of Yonkers in the finals. Some of the local schools that were represented in the tournament included Visitation, St. Barnabas, St Gabriel's, all of the Bronx. St. Elizabeth's and Incarnation of Washington Heights, and Annunciation of Yonkers. In the Semi final game, Mount St. Michael Junior High School beat Annunciation the defending CYO state champs. St Gabriel's lost to St. Pauls.

The tournament is a great way for local schools and teams to visit the Mount and learn about what Mt. St. Michael has to offer both in the classroom and on the playing fields. It also allows elementary school programs to play at our newly renovated Richard Tricario Gymnasium - the largest high school gym in the Bronx. Each participant received a tee-shirt and a packet with information about our school. Champions and Runners-up received trophies. They also received two free football tickets to watch a Mount varsity football playoff game! The players and their families really seemed to enjoy themselves.

Mount Junior High Tournament Basketball has a long and rich history in the Bronx. The Mount Men's Club used to run a spring basketball tournament for many years in the 1950's right on into the mid 1990's. This annual tournament is hoping to carry on that tradition. At one time this tournament attracted 32 teams! This year's tournament started with 8 teams with the hopes of expanding to 16 teams in the future.

The Mount Junior High basketball team is off to a great start. In addition to this Tip-off Tournament, the team recently won the AYYA Shootout in Yonkers and, as of this writing, is undefeated so far this season. Their coach is Ms. Miriam Skrivanek a math teacher in our high school.
