Legends of the Mount - Class of 2006
Every two years, Mount St. Michael Academy honors those men who have made an indelible impression on the school and whose names always will be remembered by the Mount. Save the date for this year's induction of six Legends of the Mount... Thursday evening, April 6th 2006. Our celebration will be held at The Glen Island Harbour Club off the Shore Road in New Rochelle, New York and it promises to be a spectacular evening in every way… a tribute to memorable Mount men and a wonderful dinner in a very beautiful setting on Long Island Sound. The Legends of the Mount for the Class of 2006 are:
Brother Joseph Damian, F.M.S., deceased 1988. Brother Damian was a Mount Director from 1939 to 1943. He then returned to the Mount in 1959 administering the cafeteria for boarding and day school students. In addition, he served as a teacher of mathematics, and, he was a most beloved moderator for the Mount Mothers' Club for more than 25 years.
Monsignor Terence J. Attridge '57, deceased 2000. Monsignor Attridge was a pastor and teacher. He headed the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program for the Archdiocese of New York. Terry was Pastor at Sacred Heart Parish in Dobbs Ferry. In addition, he was the Chaplain for the New York State Parole Officers as well as for the Federal Law Enforcement Officers in New York.
Mr. Kenneth G. Gamble '58. Ken is a former Mount Board Chairman and has contributed in myriad ways to the success of Mount Saint Michael. He is CEO of Gamble Insurance and is affiliated with Frank Crystal and Company, Inc. serving financial institutions. In addition, Ken is a member of the New York advisory Board for Systic Fibrosis and was honored by St. Patrick's Home for the Aged and Infirm in the Bronx. He and his wife, Patsy, support numerous religious and civic organizations.
Mr. Matthew J. Merritt, Jr. '50. Matt is the Founder, President and CEO of Valleyhead, a residential school for girls with emotional needs. He also is President and CEO of Bennington School, the Berkshire Center for Contemporary Glass, a Principal with Vermont Ventures, Berkshire Development Associates and Valleyhead Company. In addition, he has served on many educational and civic boards in the Northeast and was a First Lieutenant in the US Army Infantry.
Mr. Richard V. Guerin '50. Rich was a former standout guard with the New York Knicks in the late 50s and early 60s. He then coached the St. Louis/ Atlanta Hawks, respectively, for several years in the NBA, earning Coach of the Year honors in 1968. Following his illustrious career with the National Basketball Association, he was with Bear Stearns & Co., Inc. in New York City and is currently retired in Florida.
Lt. Col. Alfred G. Kull, USA (Retired). Al played football in college, so following his years in the service, he became a health / physical education teacher and football coach at the Mount in 1951. He served under the Mount's legendary coach, Howie Smith, and continued with the school until 1972 when he retired. He advocated that his students be tough physically and mentally and that they must be accountable. Al is remembered fondly by many alumni and he often returns to the Mount for reunions.
